Learning Environment and Architectural Creativity – A Guide to Reference Practices

Abstract

The studio environment plays a fundamental role in the students' architectural life and influences their motivation to learn and gain the competence of 'creativity'. Studies have shown that there are clear deficiencies in it and not keep up with the great changes in the practice of the profession.  The research focused on developing the studio environment and extracting a clear integrated vision of its design standards, characteristics and practices that support creativity. The results of the research are considered as a pillar of assessment plans of learning environments.      The research answered with a new comprehensive concept that is consistent with the requirements of practicing the profession at the moment the following questions: (1) What are the characteristics and practices of the learning environment in the studio?(2) How can they be assessed?(3) What are the roles of both of the teacher and the student?. The research depended  on the scientific approaches: the  inductive, system analysis and  practical.It concluded the architectural design criteria of the advanced studio. It  also deduced nine key characteristics of the studio's creative environment and practices. The research suggested a guide to measure those characteristics, reference practices and program policies that support an incentive or competence for students' creativity.   The guide sheds light on: the characteristics of the professor, culture and professional practices in the studio, the impact of the studio's architectural design on the student's motivation for learning and creativity, the extent of its use of information technology, the style of the culture of the studio, communication practices and the student's architectural culture supporting / hindering the process of creativity. The research bridged the gap between the results of previous research and concluded an integrated vesion of how to enhance the motivation of creativity and develop the efficiency of creativity for students in the studio environment and designed tools for measurement. The research recommended the application of the results to improve learning environments in architectural education programs and open a new field of research development of architectural education focused on the student and how
